Nashville’s Sports Galore
Nashville, Tennessee is home to two major professional sports team – The Tennessee Titans in the NFL, and The Nashville Predators in the NHL.
Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans are widely regarded as one of the best teams in the NFL. Originally founded as the Houston Oilers, the team relocated to from Texas to Tennessee in 1997. It wasn’t until the team had a home field two years later in 1999 that they changed their name from the “Tennessee Oilers” to the “Tennessee Titans”. The team plays in Nissan Stadium in Nashville, which originally opened as Adelphia Coliseum. NFL “historians” may remember the team’s “Music City Miracle.” In this legendary play, tight end Frank Wycheck lateral passed the ball to the team’s wide receiver Kevin Dyson during a kick return, who then proceeded to score a touchdown. This play isn’t the miracle – the real miracle is that the Titans went on to win the game given their less than desirable offensive performance. The Titans were able to clear just 55 yards to win the 1999 wild-card win – the fewest yards ever ran with a win during the postseason in NFL history.
Another claim to fame for the Titans is CJ2K – also known as Chris Johnson. Chris Johnson rushed for 2,006 yards in the 2009 season – making it the most rushed by any player during a 2000-yard rushing season. Johnson ended that season with eleven consecutive 100-yard games – the second longest in-season streak in NFL history. CJ2K was behind Barry Sanders – who ran had fourteen 100-yard games in the 1997 season.
Nashville Predators
Any NHL fan surely knows the near Stanley Cup run that the Nashville Predators had in 2015, and how they were even closer this year in 2017. On May 16, 2017, the predators became the first team in 20 (since the Detroit Redwings in 1997) years to achieve 10 consecutive wins on their home rink during the postseason.
As the interest and pride for the team rise in the city of Nashville so does the morale, and in turn, the game of their team improves as well. It makes sense that not every Nashvillian is on the Predator train yet, as their a fairly fresh team in the NHL. The Predators joined the NHL as a new team during the 1998-1999 season.
Predator superfans know that the blue saber-tooth cat that does stunts like zip lines, and a pendulum swing under the scoreboard is named Gnash.
The logo of the predators is a reference to parts of a Saber Tooth tiger skeleton that were found beneath a section of Downtown Nashville circa 1971. During the construction of the First American Tower (Now called the UBS tower), the skeleton of a certain sabertooth tiger, as well as human remains, were recovered.
Before they were incorporated, the franchise allowed the vans to vote for the name of the team. Out of 75 potential names, 4 were settled upon: Ice Tigers, Attack, Fury, and Predators. You can guess which name rocked the vote!
