Located in historic Davidson, Tennessee county is one of the South’s shining gems, Nashville. Nashville is the capital of Tennessee, and the most populated city in the state to boot. Known by its nickname “Music City, U.S.A”, this musical municipality is one of the primary spots for country-music diehards.
A Brief History Of Music City
Nashville was founded in 1779, and named for Francis Nash, an American revolutionary war hero. By 1800, the town had 345 people living there – a figure that includes 136 slaves, and an additional 14 free black people. By 1843, Nashville was named the capital of The State of Tennessee.
During the Civil War, Nashville was captured early on by the Union, and remained in the North’s control for the remaining duration of the war. The Battle of Nashville in December of 1864 marked a remarkable victory for the north, and also marked the final major military action of the Civil War.
Country music’s deep involvement in the city of Nashville begins with the Grand Ole Opry, which is a stage-concert and radio show that’s broadcast dates back to the late 1920s in Nashville. Famous country musicians from across the country made their way to Nashville to perform music and record songs, and with them came crowds of adoring fans. The Grand Ole Opry plays a huge role in the establishment of Nashville as a whole. As a matter of fact, the Grand Ole Opry is so significant to the city of Nashville that the name “Grand Ole Opry” is included on the city and county lines on all of the major roadways. What Makes The Music City Sing With Joy?
Nashville is known across the country, and much of the globe for the cities deep seeded hand in the creation and contemporization of American country music. As a matter of fact, Nashville is a metonym (figure of speech in which a thing or concept is referred to by the name of something closely associated with that thing or concept) for the country music industry. Among the country music related attractions are the Grand Ole Opry House, The Ryman Auditorium, and the yearly Country Music Awards, which brings thousands of country fans to the city each June.
Athens of the South
Since Nashville is known as the Athens of the South, it’s no surprise that there’s some incredible classical architecture to sight see within the city. The Parthenon was built in 1897 to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the state, and was fittingly placed in Centennial Park, just west of Downtown Nashville. Oddly enough, the idea to create a full-scale replica replica of a greek temple in Tennessee came from a former Confederate soldier named William Crawford Smith. Incredible architecture, art and history smother the area in and around the Parthenon as well as the rest of Centennial Park, and if you ever find yourself in Nashville, it’s truly something to behold.
